I’m not a “saver”. Yeah, I’ll admit it……I like getting rid of stuff. I love throwing stuff away. Or giving it away. (By the way…..I have a Queen Anne’s style coffee table that I would love to give to someone!) I’m a minimalist. I love the convergence of simplicity, beauty and function. It just makes cleaning easier. It makes managing my stuff easier. It’s just “good clean fun” (as Tony Guyer would say).
But there are certain things that I always save. I save encouraging cards. I have 7 on my desk right now. One from Carrie Rudy (thank you, sweet girl), one from Angie Stolzfus (you’re a sweet heart), a deeply thoughtful and tender card from Jaime Sentz, a fun and sweet card from Doug and Brenda (love it, love it–thank you all!), one from dear out-of-town guests, a thank you note from my precious friend Rebekah Kessler, and a deeply encouraging note from Cori’s mom. (Thank you, Dawn! Your words mean so much.)
Whenever I receive a note—I am reminded again—of how simple acts of kindness can have a much greater impact than I would expect. I am affected and changed in ways that the original writer probably doesn’t realize. Their words strengthen and help me in ways they couldn’t know. And I realize again that: it’s often not the BIG acts of kindness that affect me the most—often it’s the simple acts—the thoughtful note—the little gift—the simple words at church—that strengthen and encourage the most. It’s just remembering a date. Or a smile with your greeting. Or saying, “You are so kind”—that can bring grace and joy to another. And lift them up.
Here’s our happy thought…….simple acts or words of kindness bring grace. Let’s plant gardens of kindness this summer!

Guess who picked out that card Cynthia . . . the rest of us didn’t find it nearly as funny as Doug. To make matters worse, as we each tried to sign the card we had to pass it carefully so as to not trigger the message again!!!
I have your Christmas letter in my drawer, which I pull out often to remind myself that God is working in my life despite what I feel, or where I wish I would be by now. I love how you are extremely thoughtful in what you say; how you don’t say the same words to more than one person. I know your care very deeply. Love you friend, Brenda

Thank you, Cynthia, for those timely words. I needed to be reminded of that yet again. I wrote down your happy thought on an index card so I can place it where it can be seen and by God’s grace practiced throughout my days.

P.S. I like getting rid of stuff too!

Well, my attic will attest to the fact that I like to KEEP stuff, but since I received so many gracious notes and letters with the death of my mom, and now my grandmother, I must say that keeping notes of encouragement has taken on new importance to me. But what a wonderful reminder, Cynthia, to be a sender, as well as a receiver of kind words.

You may like to know that I have a note of kindness from YOU sitting right here on my desk next to me and probably will never part with it. The kids will go through my things one day and find a letter to their Mama from Nonnie Cyn-tia. I’m like you, I LOVE words and really should give them away more often.
Love you!

Cynthia,
You have been encouraging me for 27…coming up on 28 years so I know first hand that you excel at it.
I have also watched as you extended kindness to myself and others. Often.
I’m so thankfull that you are faithful to use your God given gift(s) to bless others.
I’ve seen your “garden”; it is in full bloom.

Thank you, Cynthia, for the intentional caring glance and smile you gave me this morning at church. God’s love was shining through you to me.
