After Sunday, Wednesday is the best day of the week.  That’s because Wednesday night is our family night.  Every Wednesday our girls wake up asking, “What are we doing for family night?”  We rarely tell them until it happens; just to keep things interesting.

Every Wednesday night we have a kid friendly meal.  (This week was Shepherd’s Pie.  Not too kid friendly, you say.  I agree, but sometimes you just have to use up what’s in the fridge!)  We have a family night dish that rotates weekly to each family member.  The person who gets the family night dish is also the one who is honored by the rest of us.  Sometimes we hear profound thanks and honor; lives being transformed right at the table.  Other times it is slightly less profound, “I like it when you blow bubbles with me.”  None of us remember blowing bubbles with this particular child; but, it does make us all smile when it is her turn to share.  It gives Pete and I an opportunity to help her understand what honoring is and that highlighting God’s work in one another is the goal.  It is particularly fun when each of the girls want to go first.  They are so excited to share.

Once the dishes are cleaned, we try to do something that will help us create a memory.  This may include a time of family worship with Pete leading on guitar!  Pete may read a particular book over several weeks to the family.  We may go to the church property for a picnic and a hike…my personal favorite!  We may all get into our bed and watch a video.  We might even camp in the backyard (my kind of camping…showers and bathrooms near by).

This week I had to run a quick errand on our way to Dairy Queen.  My errand was near the Claire’s store at the Tanger Outlets.  Knowing that our girls LOVE Claire’s, Pete took all five girls to Claire’s, not exactly a guy’s store.  He did that so I could complete my errand without distraction and that our girls could go to a fun store that they enjoy.  It was a sweet sight to see Pete with Felicity on his shoulders (as she forgot her shoes); pushing a stroller; and a sea of girls all around him.  (Hang in there, Pete.  One day, Lord willing, you will have five sons-in-law and you can go to the ESPN Zone).  What a perfect daddy for girls.  What a sweet memory.

Another family night has come and gone.  Sometimes family night is an exciting fun filled night of adventure.  Sometimes it is a layed back night that we spend just hanging out and being together.  Either way, it is such a fun way to interupt our week and be together for the glory of God.  Can’t wait till next Wednesday!
